Understanding Software Updates for ROTOR+ and PIXL
Email notifications are received when new software updates are available. A pop-up notification appears on the device if connected to the internet. The updates are securely stored on a Microsoft Azure BLOB. Before installation, the installer undergoes verification and requires manual confirmation. Currently, only ROTOR+ and PIXL products are eligible for these software updates.
Introduction
When a new software update is released for the ROTOR+ and PIXL customers will be notified by email. If the ROTOR+ or PIXL has an external internet connection when the user opens the software a pop up will appear infoming of a new release and the option do install the software.
The following explains what is happening in the back end to notify of a new software release. This can be useful when customers are concerned about privacy and security when connected to the internet.
How does the automatic update work?
Automatic updates are stored in a Microsoft Azure BLOB.
It is publicly readable but has security on the write. When the software checks for updates it looks at the ROTOR+/ PIXL BLOB container to find the newest installer. If it is newer than the installed version it provides a pop-up telling the user a new version is available and asks if they want to install it. If the user agrees it is downloaded and run. The installer requires manual confirmation and is signed so that it is verified to have come from Singer Instrument Co. Ltd.
